The UK Gambling Commission enhances player protection through licensing updates

The UK Gambling Commission is looking to enhance player protection with updates to license requirements.

As the online gambling market has evolved, so too has the UK Gambling Commission which continues to earn a reputation for being tough on licensees who breach their terms. In fact, only a few days ago we wrote about the suspension of Every Matrix Software’s licence for weaknesses in their compliance and customer interaction. Today, let’s talk about the news of a UKGC 2019 update.

Revisions to the licence conditions and codes of practice (LCCP)

The intent of the UKGC 2019 update to the LCCP is to increase transparency for research, prevention and treatment, to boost standards for alternative dispute resolution and greater licensee requirements for identifying and interacting with customers at risk from harm. The changes come after consultations and are expected to be implemented later in the year and early next year.

The first licensing updates will take hold on October 31^st, 2019 with the last on January, 1^st, 2020.

UKGC 2019 update

As of October 31^st, 2019, businesses that interact with clients will be required to focus on identifying and interacting with customers at risk of gambling related harm. Licensees must also assess the risk of customer interaction. Additionally, gambling operators will need to use ADR providers who meet ADR Regulations. This includes decision making, governance and customer service.

Finally, the new rules mean that operators must meet their duty to fund research, treatment and prevention. The scope is to deliver on the National Strategy to Reduce Gambling Harm in Britain. This will come into force on January, 1^st, 2020.
